This May Be Your Only Chance To Get ‘GTA 5’ For Free

It was leaked out a little bit ahead of time, but the Epic Games Store has now debuted its biggest limited time free game ever. Grand Theft Auto 5 is now available on the service to be claimed for free over the next week, starting today, May 14, through next Thursday, May 21.

While Epic has had AAA games before (Assassin’s Creed, Just Cause) and good games (FTL, Hyper Light Drifter) as part of its free games program, GTA 5 is clearly on another level entirely as the single best selling game of all that isn’t Minecraft (that cheats, it’s way cheaper) with 120 million copies sold since its debut in 2013. It remains one of the best-selling games of the year, ever year, to this day.

The way the Epic Store’s free game works is that you can claim a game during its featured week and after that week ends…you get to keep it. What’s the catch? No catch. The idea is to gave smaller games more exposure and recommendations and bigger games the opportunity to sell microtransactions. Sometimes you can flip those.

For GTA 5, the motivation seems pretty clear. While yes, they are still actively selling lots of copies every year, the real moneymaker for the game is GTA Online, the also-free online component of the game that is loaded with microtransactions and has become a hugely popular online world over the years. So no, a free week in the Epic Games store is no skin off Rockstar’s back, and they may end up hooking people into GTA Online as a result, getting them to spend money there instead down the road.

GTA 5 and GTA Online have both been such massive successes it has likely pushed back GTA 6 far past when it would have come out normally (there were only 5 years between GTA 4 and 5). We are already on year 7 here, and according to reports, GTA 6 is still early in development over at Rockstar, meaning it is still several years away at the very least. And you can bet it will arrive with GTA Online 2 or whatever it’s called then.

GTA 5 has previously been a part of various deals over the years, and recently was on Xbox Game Pass until it was replaced by Red Dead Redemption 2. But this Epic Games store free week is literally that, completely free, as you don’t need a separate subscription to anything in order to access it. Just download and play.

This just went live now, so get on some time this week and claim it. If not, who knows if it will ever be available completely free on PC again.

Update: The demand for free GTA 5 is so great that it has knocked the Epic store offline. Mine actually loaded in another language when I finally got it to work, though I wasn’t able to claim GTA yet. Check back for updates:
